This year’s theme, ‘Honouring Our Communities’, is not simply about place or postcode. It is about people. Black people. It is about recognising individuals whose contributions are part of everyday life, yet too often go unseen.
There are so many ways to get involved in this month’s celebrations. The above site also has some incredible resource packs to support you and your pupils learning in the classroom.
Rosa Parks:
On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks boarded a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Instead of going to the back of the bus, which was designated for African Americans, she sat in the front. When the bus started to fill up with white passengers, the bus driver asked Parks to move. She refused. Her resistance set in motion one of the largest social movements in history.(https://www.womenshistory.org/education-resources/biographies/rosa-parks)
At Konflux, we also want to educate and celebrate Black History Month through our own dedicated Play in a Day workshop – ‘The History Train’. This workshop introduces some of the most significant figures and their stories, alongside the movements concerned with Black History. Livi and friends take a journey back to discover a collection of stories about black history, heritage, culture and achievements.
We thought we’d end with some classroom display ideas you and your class could get involved in making:
Highlight peoples accomplishments, include a short statement about their significance and maybe even a picture of them. You could choose people from throughout the whole history or choose to focus on a certain movement, or even focus on Black Women.
Display the lyrics and learn the songs, a fun-filled musical activity!
Choose your favourite books and create a reading corner or display for them. Encourage the children to read these books when possible to further their understanding of the topic.
